These two attractive sculptures mounted on sandstone gate posts at the Hotham Street entrance to the Fitzroy Gardens are the work of William Leslie Bowles. He won first prize with these pieces in the Fitzroy Gardens Sculpture Competition held in 1935. The "Mermaid and Fish", and the "Boy and the Pelican" sculpted in pyrmont stone were erected on the 5th and 6th of October, 1936.
